Retinol works by forcing your skin to renew faster than it naturally would. That's why it works — and it's also why it irritates: peeling, redness, and a "purge phase" are the cost of forcing the pace. Velbara takes a different route to the same receptors.

The active: Bidens Pilosa Extract

Our serum's plant-derived active is Bidens Pilosa Extract. The mechanism is specific: the plant contains phytol, which oxidises into phytanic acid — a compound that binds to the same retinoic acid receptors (RAR/RXR) that retinol activates. It's the same target, the same pathway. The difference is pace: retinol forces cell turnover into overdrive, which is what causes the irritation. Phytanic acid engages the same receptor without forcing that speed — the formula is built around that slower pace specifically to avoid the purge phase and irritation retinol is known for.

It's paired with Rose Myrtle Fruit Extract, Hyaluronic Acid, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E (Tocopherol) — hydrating and antioxidant support for the same barrier-friendly approach.

That certification means: environmentally-friendly production that respects human health, formulation built on green-chemistry principles, responsible use of natural resources, and protection of biodiversity. Concretely, it also means the formula is free of parabens, phenoxyethanol, and synthetic fragrances or dyes — no petrochemical shortcuts. It's GMO-free, and the packaging is recyclable.

Who's behind Velbara

Velbara is a small, independent skincare brand, formulated and manufactured in the EU. We started it because "just tolerate the irritation" isn't good enough advice for a skincare routine — and because there was a real, workable alternative that nobody was explaining clearly. We're not a big-name lab, and we're not pretending to be one. We're a small team building one routine, carefully, and telling you exactly what's in it.
